Why Is My Menstrual Disc Leaking? Common Reasons and Easy Fixes
If you’re new to menstrual discs, leaking can be frustrating, but it’s also one of the most common beginner issues.
The good news? In most cases, leaking doesn’t mean the disc isn’t right for you. It usually means a small adjustment is needed.
Because menstrual discs sit differently than tampons or cups, understanding placement makes a big difference.
Here are the most common reasons a menstrual disc may leak and how to fix them.
1. Your Cervix Isn’t Sitting Inside the Disc
One of the most common reasons for leaking is that the disc is sitting beside the cervix instead of underneath it.
A menstrual disc needs to collect flow directly from the cervix. If the cervix isn’t positioned inside the disc, leaks can happen.
Tip:
Your cervix feels like the tip of your nose. When inserted correctly, think of your disc as a landing pad for your cervix.
2. The Front Rim Isn’t Tucked Behind the Pubic Bone
The front rim of the disc should sit securely behind the pubic bone.
If it isn’t tucked properly, the disc can shift out of place and leak.
Fix:
Use your finger to gently push the front rim upward after insertion to make sure it feels secure.
3. The Angle of Insertion Is Off
Unlike tampons, menstrual discs should not be inserted upward.
They should be inserted at a slight angle toward your tailbone.
Aiming too high can affect placement.
Fix:
Think back, not up.
4. The Disc Is Full
If you have a heavier flow, the disc may simply be full and need emptying.
Menstrual discs can often be worn for up to 12 hours, but heavier periods may require more frequent emptying.
Learning your flow helps.
5. Your Body Is Still Adjusting
Like any new period product, menstrual discs can take practice.
It’s normal for the first few cycles to involve a bit of trial and error.
Small changes in:
- angle
- position
- tucking
can make a big difference.
Leaking Doesn’t Mean It’s Not Working
