Why I started umi
I started umi after a year of travelling. I was living out of a backpack, jumping between boats and remote islands, and falling even more in love with the ocean.
Even in paradise, my period was a nightmare. Tampons were impossible to find. Disposables took up space I didn’t have. And using single-use products in the middle of all that natural beauty just didn’t sit right.
If I’m honest, though, the frustration started long before that.
Growing up in Ireland, periods weren’t talked about. Sex ed was useless. I was too embarrassed to ask my dad to buy tampons, and my mum’s house only ever had pads. So I improvised, usually badly, and just hoped for the best.
I wanted something better. Something that worked for travel, for everyday life, and for anyone who’s ever whispered, “does anyone have a spare?”
So I created a reusable disc that fits in your pocket, works for 12 hours, and leaves nothing behind but good memories.

Our mission
The name umi means “sea” in Japanese - a symbol of strength, flow, and constant motion. It’s a reminder that periods don’t need to be hidden, softened, or dressed up in floral metaphors. They’re powerful. Natural. Worth designing for.
In Arabic, umi also means “my mother” - a fitting reflection of care, resilience, and the cycles that connect us all.
Today umi is more than just a travel fix.
One disc replaces 240+ pads or tampons every year - cutting down on waste, protecting our oceans, and giving anyone, anywhere, a cycle they can rely on.
We’re here for periods that work with your life - not against it.
